Gradual Changes
One refrain that I heard over and over from former parents was that overnight, Maren would suddenly cry much less (at 3 months) and then later, that there would suddenly be a completely peaceful night. I haven’t found that to be the case with Maren. At three months I was expecting this great transformation and instead, we got more neediness and fussiness. We were prepared for this due to...

Back from a long hiatus
Last night was Maren’s first night (in 20 weeks) when we didn’t have to get up and feed her, or reseat her pacifier or change her. We had always heard this day would come and there it was, out of the blue. It wasn’t quite an overnight thing though, we knew we were right on the cusp. Over the past week, we’ve seen her stomach get bigger (she was taking in more milk) but at...

"Slow down, chew your food..."
This I said to Maren at 2:00 am as she was inhaling her bottle and coughing it up…

How to keep a baby upright on the couch
Maren looks so cute on the couch. However there is this problem that babies can’t really keep themselves upright. They stay up for a while but then they slowly, slowly keel over until, blap they are horizontal again. What’s a daddy to do? Aha, daddy has a good idea… Smart daddy!

Headed to Hospital...
Another ultrasound today. Marnie’s amniotic fluid is low to the point where the doctor was willing to induce labor. We are happy to do so. We’ve been waiting to meet her all week. So, we are packing for the hospital again and plan on being there within the hour. We plan to come back with a li’l nipper. I’m reminded of this quote from “Raising Arizona”: ...

Everything is fine, just waiting
We are fine, we are just waiting. Marnie said that last night she could feel the baby’s head shifting so that’s a good sign. Before when we had an exam, the doctor noticed that her cervix hadn’t yet shifted from pointing to the back to pointing to the front. I suspect that was happening last night. We are, for the most part, back to our daily routine. She is feeling okay, but...

No baby for a while
We went to the doctor. The ultrasound showed that there was some water loss, but there is still plenty left. We have another ultrasound on Thursday. So, we are out of baby-is-imminent mode and back in to our day-to-day lives for the next few days.

No baby
Good morning. No baby yet. The contractions were still very small and not enough to merit us going to the hospital. However, we do want to see if marn is progressing so we are at the obgyn today.

Still no baby...
Marnie is definitely having contractions though they are short. They are occasionally strong, but we are sticking around home until they really are strong and we feel that “bearing down” feeling…

Hurry up and wait...
We are just waiting foe the contractions to get bigger and stronger now. We’ve been watching an excellent tv series called”The Pillars of the Earth” with “this brief contraction from our mother”.

Waiting for more contractions
We are back at home now. Marn’s having only a few contractions and they are small, and far apart. The good news is she’s at 80% effacement and 2 cm dilated. Also, the dad is fine (cause you wanted to know that too, right! ;)

Water breakage
Marnie’s water just broke (11:46 am EST). We are calling the doctor and getting everything in order…

Still nothing
Marn’s body is definitely shifting into a stage for birthing. It’s 9:00 pm and we are just watching tv and waiting for nature to work…

Nothing yet
Marnie’s feeling strange today and knows there is some kind of movement that is different than usual, but no baby. Stay tuned.

Holding pattern
These last few days have been hard. Like we know the fuse has been lit and we are waiting for it to go off. We are doing our best to stay sane, but it’s hard with such anticipation. Every time Marnie says “I feel weird”, my heart skips a beat and I think “this is it”, but inevitably, it’s not it. Soon though, it will. A quote from a doctor in a book...

Grocery stores
My wife being pregnant (or as I like to say, “A Pregnant”) has unfortunately cut off her favorite beverage: Wine. A close second is beer. Especially with a nice tonkatsu meal. Luckily, my sister-in-law visited us and recommended we try O’Douls instead. Sidenote about O’Douls: I haven’t had an O’Douls since I was a high school freshman on a family camping trip...

IKEA
With every moving experience, there’s always been a customary furniture-trek to IKEA. Sunday was no different for us except instead of driving 15 minutes to Emeryville, we had to drive 90 minutes to New Haven (the closest location). IKEA in New Haven is the same as the rest of the country except that it shares a lot with the ugliest building in the world… So ugly in fact, that...

Day... uh, I lost count
Today was a very big day. The moving van from Berkeley arrived. It was 60 feet long, but our stuff was squashed in a small section of it. We were going crazy because we had only a few things here and the house was so-o-o-o echo-o-o-oey. We had only recently unpacked all our boxes so it was really hard to get about 5 times more. I’ve been really enjoying seeing things that I...

Day 4
Well, we are settling in a little bit. We went over to visit some of Marnie’s friends last night. A couple named Dan and Claudia. Dan and Marnie are colleagues. It felt good to be acquainted with some new people here and Dan and Claudia are really quality people. Weather Since it’s hot and humid during the day I’m always wondering how hot it’s going to be tomorrow. I had no...

Day 2
Today we were able to take a bunch of boxes full of Marnie’s kitchen stuff from her place over to the new place. I hate to pack and Marnie hates to load so we work well together. Overall, we got a lot done. It was hot today but I never realize it until I enter a cool room and realize my glasses are in danger of becoming unusable because the sweat is dripping off my forehead right onto the...

We Made It
We made it to Northampton today. This morning, we started at our friend Rachael’s house (thanks for hosting us Rachael) for an early trip to the airport. 10 hours and 2 layovers later, we arrived in Hartford and took the shuttle over to Northampton. First thing we did was get some food to eat. Southwest peanuts and cheese Ritz do not go very far. We went to the car parking lot where...
