Today we were able to take a bunch of boxes full of Marnie’s kitchen stuff from her place over to the new place. I hate to pack and Marnie hates to load so we work well together.
Overall, we got a lot done. It was hot today but I never realize it until I enter a cool room and realize my glasses are in danger of becoming unusable because the sweat is dripping off my forehead right onto the lenses.
This evening, we went to Bub’s (my favorite) and bought an air-conditioner. These are actually really hard to buy right now because of the eastern heat wave. Stock is very low. I don’t really like the window-mounted versions because they block the view out the window, but they work really well (and that’s all stores have right now that are affordable). Boy are they heavy though.
In short, we like the house, but it shows its age more than we thought. There are a few things that were not as nice as we thought:
- Have at least one phone jack close to an electrical outlet (and have one phone jack a guest room (to turn into WiFi closet)
- The sliding kitchen door needs to be replaced
- Bathroom is pretty small
- People have been cutting on the kitchen island counter-top so it’s stained and sliced
- Basement is kind of gross. We don’t want to spend much time there.
- Loud creaks from all rooms (old creaky floor)
- Hardly any closet space
Here are the pleasant surprises:
- The 3rd floor office looks like it’s going to be perfect as I start working from home
- The Skylight in Bedroom 1 is actually a column that rises up though floor 3. The way they’ve done this is ingenious. The skylight window can be opened via ropes and the 3rd floor can also benefit because the window from the 3rd floor into the skylight column can be opened. You have to watch the video to see.
- The bathroom gets more light than we thought.
- The 3rd floor Main Room is HUGE. Marnie is setting up an office there but it could also double as a romper room for a child. The closets in that room are small, cute and unusual.
- The built-in linen drawers on the 2nd floor are pretty nice.
- The porch outside is really great and we hope to get a few cheap rocking chairs so we can just hang outside in the cool evenings
- The deck is huge and great for BBQs
- The deck has an external utility closet that’s large enough for bike storage (this is really nice)
- The chopped up the yard and there’s enough there to grow a nice garden (for next year)
- The location is really great. Closest to the gym, then Marnie’s work, then the pond (for canoeing), then the public library, then childcare, then downtown (for when I get stir crazy).
Here are the photos I’ve taken (the last one is a video tour)
